H.Y.P.E. Substance Abuse Education

Program overview:

H.Y.P.E. Athletics offers a FREE after-school Substance Abuse program, a 4-week prevention and education program for youth ages 7-18 and their parents or caregivers, available 10 times annually. This Substance Abuse program is intended to promote reduction in substance abuse, tobacco use and associated delinquent behavior in the at-risk population.

Topics:

  • Week 1:
    Educational session and presentations on the harmful physical and emotional effects of substance abuse. Discussions also include HIV / AIDS prevention, social skills, conflict resolution, anger management and the impact of drug use on the family.
  • Week 2:
    Educational group sessions focusing on behavioral restructuring and utilizing an “Efficient Youth Treatment Model”.

  • Week 3:
    Class demonstrates the process and etiology of addiction.
  • Week 4:
    Focuses on the 12-step support system, networks and how to gain access for maximum success. H.Y.P.E. has a state approved license from the Michigan Department of Community Health as a prevention specialist in substance abuse. We pride ourselves in leading the  community in educating and preventing the use of tobacco and alcohol amongst adolescent youth.

    FACTS:
  • The average age of first trying marijuana is 14 years old among teens between 12 to 17.
  • In 2010, more than 2 million youth ages 12 to 17 reported using inhalants at least once in their lifetime.
  • Approximately 52% of youth who reported

Immediate Health Effects of Tobacco

    Program Description:
  • H.Y.P.E. offers a 2-day Tobacco Prevention and Education course for middle and high school students. Participants meet twice weekly for approximately 90 minutes per session. Classes are designed to be  interactive, focusing on the immediate effects of cigarette smoking on the body and on the heart rate.

    First Session - Myths and Realities
  • Reasons young people have for smoking or not smoking
  • Realities of what cigarettes can and    cannot do
  • Immediate short-term and long-term effects of cigarette smoking
  • The process of becoming a smoker
  • Smoking and social acceptance
  • Non-smoker’s rights

    Second Session - Smoking and Biofeedback
  • Effects of elevated heart rates on the body
  • Identify situations that can change heart rates
  • Discuss the purpose and procedure of the pulse meter
  • Discuss the purpose and procedure of the tremor test
  • Reasons the pulse rate changes after smoking
  • Hand steadiness before and after smoking a cigarette
